See Tickets & ToursQuick Overview
Address: Piazza San Marco, 328, 30124 Venezia VE, Italy
District: San Marco (historic center), beside the Doge’s Palace
Closest vaporetto stops: San Marco–Vallaresso (Giardinetti) and San Zaccaria
Best first-timer route: Vaporetto Line 1 (all-stops Grand Canal) or 2 (faster) → short signed walk to the basilica.
Main Entrances
West façade (Piazza side) for regular entry. Museum & Terrace access is via the interior staircase after admission.
Good to Know
Large bags aren’t allowed inside. Use the nearby free cloakroom just off the piazza (follow local signs; allow 10–15 minutes extra).
Option 1 — Vaporetto (Waterbus)
Most scenic and reliable for visitors already in Venice.
- From Venezia Santa Lucia (train station): Line 1 (slow, all stops) or 2 (express) down the Grand Canal → get off at San Marco–Vallaresso or San Zaccaria.
- From Piazzale Roma (bus/garage): Same Lines 1/2 to San Marco; expect 25–40 minutes depending on line and crowds.
- From the Lido: Lines 1, 5.1/5.2 or seasonal routes → San Zaccaria.
- Tickets: ACTV single (75-min), 24/48/72-hour passes, or Venezia Unica cards. Validate before boarding.
Tip
Line 2 is quicker from the station, but Line 1 gives classic Grand Canal views under the Rialto Bridge.
Option 2 — Walk (Car-Free Venice)
From the Station
Allow 30–35 min via the signed pedestrian route “Per San Marco”. It’s flat but includes several bridges with steps.
From Rialto
10–12 min through narrow calli and small squares. Early morning and late evening are quieter for photos.
Wayfinding
Yellow directional signs on building corners point to San Marco, Rialto, and other landmarks — follow them when GPS struggles.
Luggage
Rolling suitcases are cumbersome over bridges. Consider station lockers if you’re visiting before hotel check-in.
Option 3 — Private Water Taxi
Door-to-Door
Fastest (and most costly) way to reach the San Marco area from the station, Piazzale Roma, or hotels with docks.
Drop-Off Points
Ask for San Marco–Vallaresso or a hotel landing near the piazza, then walk 3–6 minutes to the basilica.
When It’s Worth It
Late arrivals, groups with mobility needs, or travelers with large luggage (still not allowed inside the basilica).
Payment
Prices are fixed per boat; confirm fare before departure. Night surcharges apply.
Option 4 — From Marco Polo & Treviso Airports
Marco Polo (VCE) — Alilaguna Boat
Blue line to San Marco (Giardinetti/S. Zaccaria) is the simplest boat link. From the pier, it’s a short signed walk to the basilica.
Marco Polo — Bus + Vaporetto
ATVO/TfV bus to Piazzale Roma (≈20–25 min) → Vaporetto Lines 1/2 to San Marco.
Treviso (TSF)
ATVO coach to Piazzale Roma (≈60–70 min) → Vaporetto Lines 1/2 to San Marco.
Water Taxi from VCE
Follow “Water Taxi” signs at the airport dock; 25–35 min to San Marco area depending on traffic and lagoon chop.
With Big Bags?
Use airport/station services or hotel storage. Large luggage cannot enter the basilica — use the nearby free cloakroom before queuing.
